Happy Anniversary, CornerStone Staffing!

April 22nd, 2011

In June 1991, a new staffing service with just 2 employees came to town touting qualified and reliable temporary associates. This new service  opened its doors on Summit Avenue in Fort Worth, TX where their original office still resides. A few companies decided to give this new service a shot that year…Charlotte at Harris Hospital and Michelle at RadioShack.

Originally, we were a service focused on clerical staffing until Tecnol said, “You do such a good job filling our front office orders; would you consider staffing our plant?” We did and began staffing manufacturing plants and warehouses all over Tarrant County; including staffing 2200 people for Nokia, building cell phones at three different locations. Soon after that a new concept came to town…”buy your own stocks” through a company called TD AmeriTrade and our staffing company was asked to staff their new Alliance call center.

It has been quite a ride, growing to 13 branch locations in the late 1990′s, shrinking to 7 branches, and currently at 10 branches celebrating our 20th anniversary by entering the Dallas market with our newest branches in Addison and Downtown Dallas.

Now, celebrating 20 years in the DFW market, we look back on some great memories & lasting relationships with which we are still blessed; Texas Health Resources (formerly Harris Hospital), RadioShack, TD AmeriTrade, and many, many others. We look forward to many more partnerships in the next 20 years.

On behalf of all of us at CornerStone Staffing…THANK YOU!!! We truly appreciate your business, and to show you we mean it, CornerStone Staffing is offering 4 hours free temporary service to any clients referencing this blog when placing an order.

Assessment Tools for Making Better Hires

April 21st, 2011

Having the right tools at your disposal can make hiring a lot easier—and a lot more successful.  Here is a quick overview of different assessments tools you can use, beyond the basic job interview:

Qualifications Screens – simple questionnaires determine if an applicant has the minimum requirements to perform a job (availability, minimum age, years of related experience, etc.).

Job Simulations / Work-Sample Tests – These require the candidate to actually demonstrate or perform job tasks. Simulations may be conducted: as written tests, as role-playing exercises, on a computer, or even in real-life conditions. By design, they generally show a high degree of job-relatedness.

General Abilities Tests – Generally used for entry-level jobs or for applicants without advanced degrees. They measure broad mental abilities such as reasoning, quantitative, verbal, and spatial abilities.

Specific Ability Tests – Test for distinct mental and physical abilities, such as typing speed, reading comprehension, strength, and mechanical aptitude.

Knowledge and Skills Tests – Determine how much an individual knows about a very specific, advanced subject area such as software programming or mortgage laws. Knowledge tests are similar to specific ability assessments, but examine more sophisticated skills.

Talent Measures / Personality Inventories – Measure a candidate’s natural personal characteristics like: leadership and management skills; problem-solving ability; motivation; self-confidence; and communication styles.

Culture Fit Inventories -  Assess how well an applicant will fit into your corporate culture and work environment, to help ensure organizational commitment.

Background Investigations – Gather information from outside sources, such as former employers and police records. Employment, criminal record, and reference checks all help employers avoid potentially catastrophic hires.

Drug Screens – Use a physical specimen from the candidate (hair, urine, etc.) to determine past drug or alcohol use. Employers use drug screens to prevent industrial accidents, work-related injuries, and excessive absenteeism.

If you would like more information about any of the above assessments please contact our offices today.

Hiring Decisions – When is the Right Time to Hire?

Hiring Decisions – When is the Right Time to Hire

Let’s face it, in many businesses payroll is one the largest (if not the largest) line item on your monthly budgets.  So, it can sometimes be a very difficult decision to add on more staff.  BUT, in some cases adding staff strategically can help drive a lot of profit to your bottom line.

So when do you know it’s time to hire?  Here are a few warning signs:

  1. When bottlenecks are holding up production.
If you find that a certain area of your business is continually a bottleneck, then it’s time to evaluate your talent needs.  In many cases, adding one or two new skilled people can have a dramatic effect on production and profits.
  2. When you miss out on new business because you don’t have the needed help.
You’ve probably had a lot of great ideas for new business ventures; however, you may not have the resources to implement those plans. But with temporary or contract workers, you can tap into the resources you need, when you need them, in order to take on new opportunities and grow your business – whether that means hiring a contract IT guru to improve information security, or taking on litigation specialists for a special case.
  3. 3. When being a “do-it-yourselfer” is distracting you from your core job duties. Instead of taking the time to learn a new skill on your own, or spending hours trying to train your staff, bring in an experienced contract employee who can offer you the knowledge and capabilities you need on a temporary basis. There’s no learning curve and once the project is finished, you don’t have to worry about the cost of a full-time employee.

If you’re faced with any of these challenges, CornerStone Staffing can help.  As the leading staffing and recruiting agency in Weed, we can provide on-demand temporary staff to help eliminate bottlenecks, or recruit people with the specific skill sets you need.
